1. Climate Change

Climate change is an important global megaforce that directly impacts all the other megaforces. The risks include new laws and government initiatives to tackle climate change such as energy efficiency requirements and standards, carbon taxes, emissions cap and trade systems and fuel tariffs.

4. Water Scarcity

Businesses operating where freshwater is scarce may be vulnerable to water shortages, declines in water quality, water price volatility and reputational issues. Potential water shortages pose a threat to business growth and expansion, and conflicts over water supplies may create a security risk to both business operations and markets.

Climate change puts further pressure on water availability and quality. More frequent extreme weather events caused by climate change, such as droughts and floods, are predicted to accelerate the deterioration of local freshwater supplies.

On the other hand, companies that use water more efficiently or eliminate water use entirely through closed-loop processes and water recycling can save money and resources and reduce business risks.

5. Population Growth

The number of people on our planet is predicted to increase to 8.4 billion by 2032 in a moderate growth scenario. Population growth will also place intense pressures on ecosystems and the supply of natural resources such as food, water, energy and materials.

6. Wealth

The OECD defines the global ?middle class? as those with purchasing power of between US$10 and US$100 per capita per day, and this middle class is predicted to grow 172% between 2010 and 2030 over the next 20 years.

The challenge for businesses is to serve these new markets at a time when resources will become scarcer and more price-volatile. The greatest opportunity awaits those businesses that can provide products and services for a more resource-constrained world.

7. Urbanization

In 2009, more people lived in cities than in the countryside for the first time ever. By 2030 all developing regions are expected to have the majority of their citizens living in urban areas. For these growing cities to be habitable, they will require vast improvements in infrastructure including construction, water and sanitation, electricity, waste, transport, health, public safety and internet and cell phone connectivity.

Moving people and goods safely and efficiently through larger, densely populated urban areas will become more challenging and expensive. As cities grow, there will be greater demands on scarce resources such as clean water and open green space.

In the next 20 years, the global food system is set to come under increasing pressure from other megaforces, and global food prices could rise by 70?90% by 2030. In water-scarce regions, agricultural producers are likely to have to compete for supplies with other water-intensive industries such as electric utilities and mining and with consumers. Modernizing agricultural techniques in the developing world may provide opportunity for producers of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs.

Demand for food is expected to increase most in developing countries with their fast-growing populations and this will spur an increase in domestic production to mitigate the rising cost of food imports. Patterns of production are likely to be driven by crop yields, water availability, governance and consumer preferences.

9. Ecosystem Decline

The decline in biodiversity and ecosystems is making natural resources scarcer, more expensive and less diverse. Continued degradation of global biodiversity and ecosystem services could add to operational risk and, in certain locations, potentially jeopardize the long-term profitability and survival of some of the most-affected sectors such as forest products, agriculture and fisheries.

Companies further up the supply chain or that operate ?upstream? may be more susceptible to operational and regulatory challenges, while companies down the supply chain often have a greater degree of public exposure and therefore to potential reputation risks.

10. Deforestation

Cutting down forests ? for agriculture, commerce or housing ? directly reduces the supply of valuable natural resources and ecosystems services for business and the global community. It also removes a vital carbon sink and reduces the world?s ability to contain climate change. It hits agricultural productivity, human and animal health and economic activities such as ecotourism. It also increases land degradation and desertification by destabilizing soils, increasing erosion and reducing the cycling of nutrients through soils.

The timber industry and downstream industries such as pulp and paper are vulnerable to potential future regulation and market-based mechanisms, which incentivize farmers and landowners to manage land for an ecological purpose. They may also find themselves under increasing pressure from customers to prove that their products are sustainable through the use of certification standards. Agricultural industries seeking to meet higher demand for land-intensive products such as meat, dairy and even biofuels also need to be aware of the need to avoid sourcing products farmed on deforested land.

The 10 global sustainability megaforces are set to significantly affect the way the world does business over the next 20 years. While existing trend projections provide some insights about a possible future, the world is too uncertain and too complex to rely on linear forecasts. Therefore, business leaders should prepare for the unexpected and learn to look at the world in a new way that takes account of globally interconnected megaforces, the causal relationships between megaforces, feedback loops, effective intervention points and complex scenarios.

Turning Risks Into Opportunities

The sustainability megaforces threaten to bring increasingly complex risks and interrelated challenges that demand a new approach to business planning. Business leaders have to address and manage these risks, and more importantly, thrive by turning these risks into new opportunities with foresight and planning.

There are 4 steps for turning risks into opportunities:

First, businesses can identify sustainability risks and potential opportunities through Enterprise Risk Management tools. Companies can leverage on current risk management processes to tackle future sustainability risks and to invest more leadership capital in sustainability risk management.

Anyone know of a good Sports Injury Specialist?

I hurt my knee last winter from snowboarding and had an MRI done. Dr. says I have hurt my cartilage and I need to rest it for 3-6 months!!

Well, it has been 3 months and I have seen no improvements and really would like a 2nd opinion on my knee. Perhaps I should see a Kine? Or do some Physio? But this was not recommended from the Dr. so I'm a bit lost now. I tried swimming and that still hurt my knee.

Any suggestions or advise?

How to avoid traps in plastic electronics

Plastic electronics hold the promise of cheap, mass-produced devices. But plastic semiconductors have an important flaw: the electronic current is influenced by "charge traps" in the material. These traps, which have a negative impact on plastic light-emitting diodes and solar cells, are poorly understood.

However, a new study by a team of researchers from the University of Groningen and the Georgia Institute of Technology reveals a common mechanism underlying these traps and provides a theoretical framework to design trap-free plastic electronics. The results are presented in an advance online publication of the journal Nature Materials.

Plastic semiconductors are made from organic, carbon-based polymers, comprising a tunable forbidden energy gap. In a plastic light-emitting diode (LED), an electron current is injected into a higher molecular orbital, situated just above the energy gap. After injection, the electrons move toward the middle of the LED and fall down in energy across the forbidden energy gap, converting the energy loss into photons. As a result, an electrical current is converted into visible light.

However, during their passage through the semiconductor, a lot of electrons get stuck in traps in the material and can no longer be converted into light. In addition, this trapping process greatly reduces the electron current and moves the location where electrons are converted into photons away from the center of the device.

"This reduces the amount of light the diode can produce," explained Herman Nicolai, first author of the Nature Materials paper.

The traps are poorly understood, and it has been suggested that they are caused by kinks in the polymer chains or impurities in the material.

"We've set out to solve this puzzle by comparing the properties of these traps in nine different polymers," Nicolai explained. "The comparison revealed that the traps in all materials had a very similar energy level."

The Georgia Tech group, led by Jean-Luc Bredas, investigated computationally the electronic structure of a wide range of possible traps. "What we found out from the calculations is that the energy level of the traps measured experimentally matches that produced by a water-oxygen complex," said Bredas.

Nicolai explains that "such a complex could easily be introduced during the manufacturing of the semiconductor material, even if this is done under controlled conditions." The devices Nicolai studied were fabricated in a nitrogen atmosphere, "but this cannot prevent contamination with minute quantities of oxygen and water," he noted.

The fact that the traps have a similar energy level means that it is now possible to estimate the expected electron current in different plastic materials. And it also points the way to trap-free materials. "The trap energy lies in the forbidden energy gap," Nicolai explained.

This energy gap represents the difference in energy of the outer shell in which the electrons circle in their ground state and the higher orbital to which they can be moved to become mobile charge carriers. When such a mobile electron runs into a trap that is within the energy gap it will fall in, because the trap has a lower energy level.

"But if chemists could design semiconducting polymers in which the trap energy is above that of the higher orbital in which the electrons move through the material, they couldn't fall in," he suggested. "In this case, the energy level of the trap would be higher than that of the electron."

The results of this study are therefore important for both plastic LEDs and plastic solar cells. "In both cases, the electron current should not be hindered by charge trapping. With our results, more efficient designs can be made," Nicolai concluded.

Two new protected marine areas

Two new areas of marine protection off the coastline of Northern Ireland have been announced.

The Special Areas of Conservation include the sea and seabed surrounding the Maidens Islands off Larne and those adjacent to the Portrush Skerries and Giant's Causeway.

The move also provides protection for the harbour porpoise.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood said the sites were important for their "marine habitats and biodiversity".

He added: "They demonstrate my department's ongoing commitment to protecting our seas and the wildlife and ecosystems that they support."

The Special Areas of Conservation at the Maidens include sandbanks, reefs and grey seals, while the areas protected at the Skerries and Causeway includes sea caves, sandbanks and reefs.

Mr Attwood said the waters off the north coast were important for harbour porpoises.

"This designation confirms that their numbers in this area are significant th roughout the year. I hope this encourages people to visit the area to get a glimpse of these beautiful animals."

In the Autumn, the assembly is due to debate the Marine Bill, which aims to protect the coastal areas.

Previously designated marine areas of protection include Strangford Lough, Rathlin Island, Red Bay and Murlough Bay.

1541 GMT: JUDO: Galstyan's win in the under-60g competition was an upset the top two seeds at London's ExCel centre. The fourth seed produced a stunning finale to flatten Japan's second seed Hiroaki Hiraoka just 40 seconds into the final with a sweeping, winding throw.

World champion Rishod Sobirov meanwhile won a second straight bronze medal as he beat France's Sofiane Milous while Brazilian Felipe Kitadai beat Italy's Elio Verde for the other bronze.

1530 GMT: JUDO: Hungarian fighter Eva Csernoviczki bounces back from being strangled unconscious to claim an unlikely bronze medal in the women's under-48kg Olympic judo competition.

Csernoviczki was earlier rendered unconscious as she tried to resist a strangle in her quarter-final loss to Belgium's Charline van Snick.

But after a quick recovery she was given a second medal chance in the repechage. She beat China's Wu Shugen and then stunned world number one Tomoko Fukumi with a foot sweep in a sudden death golden score period to earn a podium finish.

1519 GMT: SHOOTING GOLD MEDAL: While the tense road cycling race came to an end in central London the first day of men's shooting action at London's Royal Artillery Barracks yielded a gold medal for South Korean sharpshooter Jin Jong-Oh in the Olympic men's 10m air pistol.

Italy's Luca Tesconi made a brave attempt to close a seemingly impregnable gap to Jin at one stage in the final to secure silver, 2.4 points behind the winner, while Serbia's Andrija Zlatic won bronze.

World number two Jin, 32, came into the afternoon final with a significant gap of two points over China's defending champion Pang Wei -- but Pang immediately lost ground to his Korean rival, making his task even harder.

1424 GMT: Our cycling reporter Justin Davis says that fans waiting for a first British cycling gold of the Games are looking despondent on the finish line of The Mall after learning that those late escapees in the men's road race have taken a 53-sec lead on the British team, led by sprint king and gold favourite Mark Cavendish.

The 32-man group attacked after Britain had worked hard to reel in an earlier escape attempt by Belgian Philippe Gilbert.

With 19 km to race in the 249.5 km race the leaders have a lead of 51sec.

1423 GMT: The gap between that breakaway group and the rest is narrowing as they approach Richmond Park -- about 51 seconds now.

1405 GMT JUDO: There has been a heart-stopping moment in the women's judo today -- a Hungarian fighter was actually strangled unconscious.

"Belgium's Charline van Snick strangled Hungary's Eva Csernoviski unconscious there," tweeted our reporter, judo black belt Barnaby Chesterman.

Csernoviski was trying to resist a strangle when she passed out and collapsed to the mat.

The referee immediately stopped the bout, awarding it to van Snick, and a medic was called but the Hungarian quickly recovered.

1400 GMT: ROWING: New Zealand's Hamish Bond and Eric Murray have set a new men's pairs rowing world record in the Olympic heats, smashing the mark held by Britain's Matthew Pinsent and James Cracknell.

The multiple world champions timed 6min 8.50sec on the first day of competition, almost six seconds quicker than the 10-year-old record set at the 2002 world championships.

"Six seconds, wow," said Bond, after the event held at Eton Dorney to the west of London.

"It's a great confidence boost to the whole team, I mean if they can beat it by six seconds, then everything has the potential to be much closer than we thought."

The duo, who are unbeaten since teaming up in 2009, are now safely into the semi-finals.

1345 GMT: FOOTBALL: Japan's women's footballers -- who are bidding to add Olympic gold to their last year's World cup title -- have been held to a goalless draw by Sweden in their second group match.

1340 GMT: Saudi commentators have hailed the inclusion of women in their Olympic team for the first time, after two female Saudi athletes appeared at last night's opening ceremony, reports our Riyadh bureau.

"The kingdom is shining with its sons and daughters in London," tweeted columnist Jamal Khashogg, while female journalist Haifa al-Zahrani said: "Finally, the Saudi team has men and women."

But others lamented the fact that the women had to walk behind the men from the ultra-conservative Islamic kingdom during the opening ceremony.

"Saudi Arabia will remain in the back seat as long as its women are in the back seat," wrote activist Manal al-Sharif.

1330 GMT: CYCLING: Tour de France champion Brad Wiggins continues to play a pivotal role for British teammate Mark Cavendish in the road race as they chased down a breakaway that threatens Cavendish's bid for gold, reports AFP's Justin Davis.

With 80 km and two climbs of Box Hill remaining, Cavendish's British team have a deficit of 1:24 to a leading group of 11 riders, with another counter-attacking group stuck in between.

At the finish line on The Mall, meanwhile, fans from several countries -- some wearing masks of world champion Cavendish and brandishing flags from his native Isle of Man -- were being treated to music played by the military band from the Coldstream Guards.

1257 GMT: GYMNASTICS: Hosts Britain may be facing a challenge in the cycling today but they've unexpectedly eclipsed China in gymnastics.

As the artistic gymnastics qualifying began, China's men were below par and finished with a score of 269.985 points to Britain's 272.420.

Guo Weiyang and Zhang Chenglong both fell from the pommel horse and Guo's floor display proved unconvincing, while Britain were solid throughout, with Kristian Thomas and Daniel Purvis topping the individual all-around standings.

Great Britain aren't known for their prowess in this area -- it's the first time their men have qualified for an Olympic final since 1924.

1250 GMT: CYCLING: AFP's Justin Davis reports that a number of determined rivals are testing Britain's determination to deliver Mark Cavendish to a gold medal-winning sprint finish in the men's road race.

Britain earlier had to seek help from rivals Germany as they continued to chase down an early breakaway that built a dangerous lead of six minutes.

But on the fourth of nine climbs of Box Hill the hosts faced more problems as a 10-man counter-attacking group escaped the peloton -- so the Brits have had to redouble their efforts.

With four of the nine laps to race in the 249.5 km race the 12-man morning breakaway had a lead of two minutes on the peloton and 1min 30sec on the counter-attack group.

Meanwhile US Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney has been spotted among spectators at the Olympic Park -- let's hope he makes more friends than earlier in the week, when Britons were offended by his seeming scepticism about whether they could pull off a successful Olympics. He has since backtracked.

1143 GMT: South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius, an amputee who will be running in this Olympics (as well as the Paralympics) on high-tech blades, tells British 400m runner Martyn Rooney on Twitter that the opening ceremony "was amazing bud! You Brits know how to (throw) a ceremony!"

1141 GMT: SWIMMING: Japan's Kosuke Kitajima, going for a third straight Olympic breaststroke double, is pipped by one-hundredth of a second in his opening heat of the 100 metres event.

Australian Christian Sprenger edges Kitajima with a time of 59.62 seconds, becoming the fastest qualifier heading into the semi-finals of the event later on today.

1139 GMT: There's no race radio in this cycling competition, so a heavily biased crowd is shouting to Team GB their time difference from the breakaway group at the front, in a bid to help out.

1135 GMT: Our cycling-watcher Justin Davis reports that Mark Cavendish's bid for Olympic road race gold is still on course, despite pressure on the Tour de France star's British team early in the race as the 12-man breakaway built a lead of nearly six minutes on the peloton, including Cavendish.

Miley clocked 4min 34.98 secs and finished a comfortable 0.78secs ahead of the Aussie.

1035 GMT: WEIGHTLIFTING: Albanian lifter Hysen Pulaku has been excluded from the Games for doping, says the International Olympic Committee.

"Hysen Pulaku, 20, tested positive on 23 July for stanozolol," their statement said.

That's a synthetic anabolic steroid that has cropped up in numerous doping cases.

1034 GMT: Yi's triumph will warm Chinese hearts, although the team has played down suggestions they may top the gold medal tally again this year.

Still in the women's 10m air rifle shooting, Malaysian mum-to-be Nur Suryani Mohamad Taibi earlier failed to make the final.

She's due to give birth in September, but said her baby's kicks hadn't distracted her.

"It's a dream come true taking part in the Olympics," said the Malaysian.

Thetus Takes a Big Step for Education in Portland : Beyond Search

Thetus just took a big step for education by jumping on board a special education program at the local college. The Thetus site proudly announced their future in education in the article, ?Thetus Joins the Portland Cooperative Education Program.?

The Portland Cooperative Education Program (PCEP) connects local software companies with Portland State Universities Computer Science students. The students participate via internships with approved companies. Thus, students gain hands on experience in an internship atmosphere. PCEP hopes the end result will help students to focus their development and integrate more easily into a work atmosphere.

The students involved will have a specific regime, which is:

?Students round out their classroom experience by working 20 hours a week for four consecutive 6-month terms in the three tracks: Software Engineering/Software Development, Quality Assurance, and/or Developer Operations. The student changes companies at least once during their 24-month program.?

Thetus was created in 2003 and has provided semantic knowledge modeling and discovery solutions ever since. They specialize in extracting and managing information to support business decision making.

The internship program is a great way to further education with real life skills. By interning at Thetus students will gain insight into a variety of markets, such as energy, environmental, law enforcement, defense and intelligence.

Thetus is doing really good in Portland and joining the PCEP just earned them a spot on the honor roll.

Square Enix, Inc., the publisher of SQUARE ENIX? interactive entertainment products in the Americas, today announced the upcoming release of two downloadable puzzle packs for Quantum Conundrum?, the first-person environmental puzzle game from Airtight Games and Kim Swift. Quantum Conundrum is currently available for digital download on Windows PC via Steam?, PlayStation?Network for the PlayStation?3 computer entertainment system and Xbox LIVE? Arcade for the Xbox 360? video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

From the moment they leave their hospital room to the time they get settled in back home, it is imperative that you plan ahead to make sure the transition from hospital to home is free of dangers and as comfortable as possible.

Among the first considerations are clothing and footwear for your senior to wear home. Loose comfortable slacks and a button front shirt are usually best as they are easier to slip on. Consider sneakers or low slip-on shoes with steady treads to prevent falls. Also be sure to take the weather into consideration and decide if a jacket and/or hat will be necessary.

You senior will likely ride in a wheel chair to the exit and then enter into the vehicle that will deliver him or her home. Make sure to find out how mobile your senior will be so you can arrange for appropriate transportation:

Ask his or her healthcare providers if standing, walking or sitting will be possible and for how long.
Find out if your senior will be coming home with any medical equipment such as a wheelchair, IV or oxygen system.
If your senior loved one is mobile enough you may be able to get him or her home in the car of a family member or friend. However, if there are restrictions you may have to seek alternate private transport services such as a wheelchair van or ambulance. If necessary, the social worker or discharge coordinator can help you arrange these services and help to determine if insurance generally will cover the costs.

If your loved one will need prescriptions, make arrangements to have those filled and picked up either in advance or by someone else such as an?in-home care companion, so you can take your family member directly home. Likewise, make sure you have restocked the refrigerator and pantry, as well as picked up any special foods or medical supplies, before discharge.

Even before your senior loved one returns home you should take a look around both inside and outside the house to look for hidden dangers.

Outside make sure walkways and stairs are free of debris and swept clean. Also check hand rails to make sure they are steady and free of chips or splinters and remove any door mats that might cause your senior to trip. Lighting is another consideration so be sure all bulbs are in working order and provide enough illumination.

There are many safety considerations inside the house as well:

When your senior loved one comes home he or she may be a bit disoriented. To make help make things clearer for them install large red and blue buttons over hot and cold water faucet controls to prevent dangerous mistakes. A dark green or brown toilet seat and vinyl tape around the shower will make those fixtures more easily distinguishable as well. To make getting up easier, you may also want to consider installing grab bars or a raised toilet seat. And safety devices, such as lock-in switches on stoves and thermostats can prevent burns and fires from occurring.

Returning home from the hospital should be a happy time for your senior loved one. By taking preventative steps, you can help to ensure the return home is safe as well.
