AUBURN, Alabama -- Auburn's

?defense had to take a break today because the schedule-makers said so. But the Tigers' defenders will nonetheless carry some momentum into next week's game against Arkansas following a steady performance in last week's 12-10 loss to LSU.

Auburn found some energy with some young defensive backs in that game. Josh Holsey, Erique Florence, and Robenson Therezie, all of whom played significantly more against LSU than they did in the first three games. ?

Secondary coach Willie Martinez gives a detailed look at his players in this video. Are the changes surprising? Not any more. Martinez has flipped his defensive backs in the first month, changing starters and backups with regularity. Seven different defensive backs have started in the first four games, and that doesn't include backups Holsey, Florence or Therezie.

Martinez said Holsey, a true freshman, won more time because of his special teams play. Martinez said Therezie, a sophomore who started as a defensive back before moving to running before moving back to defensive back, was needed to match the physical nature of LSU. Martinez said he liked the energy of Florence, a sophomore.?

"They're getting better and better. Their role could get bigger and bigger," Martinez said. "It really just depends on them, how they continue to practice and continue to earn reps. They earn reps. When they got in there, they did some really good things. They weren't perfect, but they played with a lot of energy and a lot of physicality."

There was some talk that Texas Instruments would be getting out of the mobile game a few days ago, but a TI rep has clarified the company's position just a bit. Mobile is still in the picture, but they're looking to make their products suitable for automotive, industrial, enterprise communication, vision, and robotics fields as well. 

It's good to hear that TI isn't completely abandoning mobile, even if it means they won't be focusing on it in as specifically as before. I've seen some really impressive OMAP tech demos at TI's booth at the last two Mobile World Congress events, and it would be a shame to lose out on that innovation and see it head towards other sectors. On the other hand, with Samsung, Apple, Qualcomm, and Nvidia all in the mix, the smartphone and tablet processor market has become quite competitive. 

OMAP 4 is still at the heart of Amazon tablets and a handful of other devices. Any big OMAP fans out there that are looking forward to version 5? Have you developed a preference for any particular type of processor?

New Report Shows Assisted Living More Affordable Than Skilled ...

According to a new report, the median cost of a room in an assisted living community is less than half the median cost of a private room in a skilled nursing facility. The cost disparity has increased since last year, with skilled nursing costs inflating at a higher rate than assisted living costs.

Genworth Financial released its annual report analyzing long-term care costs across the nation and revealed that the median annual rate for a resident of an assisted living community is $39,600. The rate for a private room at a skilled nursing facility under the same consideration, is $81,030. The rate for a semi-private room is $73,000. This disparity has grown since last year, increasing 4.23 percent for a private room at a skilled nursing facility, and a 3.36 percent increase for a semi-private room at a skilled nursing facility over the same period.

Surprisingly, you may end up better off this year by having your corporation forgo a tax deduction.

Strategy: Make this a ?dividend year.? In other words, instead of receiving income in the form of tax-deductible wages, arrange to have the company pay out dividends to yourself.

If you?re in a high tax bracket and your company is in a low one, which is often the case for small business owners, you?ll save tax overall due to the current tax break for qualified dividends.

Here?s the whole story: Under the extended Bush tax cuts, dividends from domestic companies are generally taxed at a maximum 15% tax rate in 2012.

Beginning in 2013, this tax break is scheduled to expire. Barring new legislation, dividends will be taxed at ordinary income rates reaching as high as 39.6% next year (up from a top rate of 35% in 2012).

Although wages are deductible by a C corporation and dividends are not, a business owner may benefit by shifting wages to dividends if he or she is in a higher tax bracket in 2012. In addition to the tax break for dividends, you avoid payroll taxes on amounts paid as dividends.

Example: You?re in the 35% tax bracket and you receive an annual $100,000 salary from your C corporation business. The company is in the 25% bracket. If it pays $10,000 to you in dividends instead of wages, your income tax is $1,500 (15% of $10,000) as opposed to $3,500 (35% of $10,000), or $2,000 less.

Also, you save $565 in payroll tax (5.65% of $10,000), while the company saves $765 (7.65% of $10,000). Total savings: $3,330 ($2,000 + $565 + $765).

Even though your company loses a $2,500 de????duction (25% of $10,000), you and your com??pany together still come out $830 ahead overall ($3,330 ? $2,500).

Tip: This strategy doesn?t work for personal service corporations required to pay tax at a flat 35% rate.

What's more, due to the new 3.8% Medicare surtax under the new health care law, you could be paying an effective top tax rate of 43.4% in 2013.

U.S. shares fall, euro pressured on Spain rescue

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday as investors sought a catalyst to justify further gains and the euro was under pressure on concerns about a bailout for debt-laden Spain.

The euro was about two cents from the 4-1/2-month peak posted against the U.S. dollar. Renewed worries about global growth also weighed on markets.

Earlier Wall Street had been buoyed by end-of-quarter buying by funds and a higher-than-expected reading of confidence among American consumers.

But as the day wore on in New York and major U.S asset manager BlackRock said the strong equity rally this year has run its course, the gains were erased and stocks declined.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 52.02 points, or 0.38 percent, at 13,506.90. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was down 8.53 points, or 0.59 percent, at 1,448.36. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 26.55 points, or 0.84 percent, at 3,134.23.

The MSCI world equity index was little changed at 336.288. European shares gained 0.4 percent.

"Any downdraft is going to be abbreviated with the recognition of the fact the Fed has effectively put a floor in the market, and it's not just the Fed, it's the ECB as well," said Peter Kenny, managing director at Knight Capital in Jersey City, New Jersey.

"What we are kind of dealing with here is a rudderless ship - there is no economic data to support any sort of robust buy activity."

U.S. stocks rose at the open after comments late on Monday from the president of the San Francisco Fed suggested the central bank was not done taking action to stimulate the economy. That overshadowed a pessimistic outlook from Caterpillar .<.n/>

U.S. stocks were also supported early by a private sector report showing U.S. consumer confidence jumped to its highest level in seven months in September.

"There are some incrementally positive consumer numbers and housing data," said Dan Veru, chief investment officer at Palisade Capital Management LLC in Fort Lee, New Jersey, which oversees $3.6 billion. "It's in the face of a weaker forecast from Caterpillar, but it's difficult to get too upset about stuff they are talking about for 2015."

Caterpillar shares fell 3 percent. On Monday, Caterpillar Inc cut its 2015 profit outlook, warning that weaker commodity prices would result in a bigger-than-expected decline in demand.

NO HUGE BETS

U.S. data showed single-family home prices rose for a sixth month in a row in July, though the improvement was not as strong as expected.

The euro was also little changed at $1.2925.

The overall support for the single currency rally in recent weeks was the European Central Bank's offer to provide bailout funds to indebted governments - if they seek its help and are willing to accept tough conditions.

But investors were not making huge bets.

"Fears about Europe's situation remain among investors, with the focus mostly on Spain, but Greece is also still a concern," said Kimihiko Tomita, head of foreign exchange for State Street Global Markets in Tokyo.

At the center of market concerns is what happens next in Spain. The government is due this week to present its draft budget for 2013, outline new structural reforms for the economy and release the results of stress tests on the banking sector.

U.S. Treasury debt prices were mixed.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note was up 7/32, with the yield at 1.6887 percent. The 2-year U.S. Treasury note was down 1/32, with the yield at 0.2703 percent.

GROWTH CONCERNS

After the recent central bank actions, many investors have become convinced that markets can rally further. But they believe any gains are highly dependent on signs the slowdown in the global economy has bottomed.

"The majority of central banks are in total, outspoken reflationary mode. That's a big story," said Didier Duret, chief investment officer at ABN Amro Private Banking in London.

Researchers discover what vampire squids eat: It's not what you think

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? About 100 years ago, marine biologists hauled the first vampire squid up from the depths of the sea. Since that time, perhaps a dozen scientific papers have been published on this mysterious animal, but no one has been able to figure out exactly what it eats. A new paper by MBARI Postdoctoral Fellow Henk-Jan Hoving and Senior Scientist Bruce Robison shows for the first time that, unlike its relatives the octopuses and squids, which eat live prey, the vampire squid uses two thread-like filaments to capture bits of organic debris that sink down from the ocean surface into the deep sea.

It's easy to imagine the vampire squid as a nightmarish predator. It lurks in the eternal midnight of the deep sea, has a dark red body, huge blue eyes, and a cloak-like web that stretches between its eight arms. When threatened, it turns inside out, exposing rows of wicked-looking "cirri." Even its scientific name, Vampyroteuthis infernalis, means "vampire squid from hell."

In reality, the vampire squid is a soft-bodied, passive creature, about the size, shape, and color of a football. A "living fossil," it inhabits the deep waters of all the world's ocean basins at depths where there is almost no oxygen, but also relatively few predators.

A few previous researchers have caught vampire squids in nets, hauled them up to the surface, and tried to figure out what they ate by examining the contents of their stomachs. The results were generally inconclusive. The stomachs typically contained bits and pieces of tiny, shrimp-like animals, microscopic algae, and lots of slimy goo.

In a recent article in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, Hoving and Robison show that vampire squids eat mostly "marine snow" -- a mixture of dead bodies, poop, and snot. The dead bodies are the remains of microscopic algae and animals that live in the waters farther up in the ocean, but sink down into the depths after they die. The poop consists of fecal pellets from small, shrimp-like animals such as copepods or krill. The snot is mostly debris from gelatinous animals called larvaceans, which filter and consume marine snow using mucus nets.

In addition to looking at the stomach-contents of vampire squids from museum collections, the researchers used MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to collect live vampire squids and study their feeding habits in the laboratory. They also examined high-definition videos of vampire squids taken by MBARI's ROVs. Finally, they examined vampire squid arms and feeding filaments under optical and scanning electron microscopes.

One key to Hoving and Robison's discovery was that they used MBARI's ROVs to collect living vampire squids, and were able to keep them alive in the laboratory for months at a time. Hoving soon found that if he placed bits and pieces of microscopic animals into a tank with a vampire squid, the food particles would stick to one of the string-like filaments that the animal sometimes extends outward from its body. The vampire squid would then draw the filament through its arms, removing the particles from the filament and enveloping them in mucus. Finally, the squid would transfer the glob of mucus and particles to its mouth and consume it.

Using MBARI's video annotation and reference system (VARS), Hoving also identified every MBARI ROV dive over the last 25 years during which researchers had seen a vampire squid. He then pored over 170 of these video clips (over 23 hours of footage) to look for additional clues as to what and how the animals ate.

The videos showed that vampire squids often drift motionless in the water, extending one of their thin filaments -- up to eight times as long as the animal's body -- like a fishing line. In many cases, Hoving saw bits of marine snow sticking to the filament. He also saw vampire squids slowly pulling in their filaments and scraping off the accumulated marine snow using their arms. Other vampire squids had globs of marine snow and mucus dangling from their mouths.

Under the microscope, the researchers observed that the vampire squid's suckers were covered with cells that produce mucus, which the animal apparently uses to collect and glue together individual particles of marine snow. Their filaments are covered with tiny hairs and a dense net of sensory nerves, which makes them extremely sensitive to touch.

When looking at vampire squids' stomach contents, the researchers did not see bones or pieces of individual animals that would indicate the vampire squids had captured live prey. Instead, they saw mostly amorphous bits of broken-up organic debris. The only prey they saw that might have been eaten alive were the remains of tiny crustaceans that sometimes "hitchhike" on sinking mucus nets or clumps of the marine snow.

After considering all the evidence, Hoving and Robison conclude that, "the vampire squid's filament is likely a multifunctional organ that is deployed to detect and capture detrital matter but at the same time may detect the presence of predators and perhaps small living prey."

The organic detritus that forms the bulk of the vampire squid's diet would not seem to be particularly nutritious. However vampire squids complement their frugal diet with an extremely energy-efficient lifestyle and unique adaptations. Their bodies are neutrally buoyant, so they don't have to expend energy to stay at a particular depth. Even better, they don't have to swim to find food, but simply extend their filaments to collect food that drifts past them.

Finally, vampire squids don't have to expend much energy avoiding predators, because they live at depths where there is so little oxygen that few other animals can survive. Conveniently, these deep, low-oxygen zones are often found where there is an abundance of life near the sea surface, which in turn creates lots of marine snow for vampire squids to eat. Hoving explains, "Because of its unique adaptations, the vampire squid is able to permanently and successfully inhabit the center of the oxygen minimum zone, an otherwise hostile environment where the vampire squid's predators are few, and its food is abundant."

Even though Hoving and Robison's research shows that the vampire squid is a "detritivore" rather than an active predator, its sinister appearance and stealthy habits will no doubt continue to fascinate both researchers and the general public.

5 Strategies for Success in the Legal Field | CAREEREALISM

For at least 20 years, women have accounted for half or nearly half of all law students. However, those numbers have not translated into equal representation in the higher ranks within the legal profession, according to the American Bar Association. But that doesn?t mean women entering the legal profession should stop trying to break that glass ceiling. Here are five strategies for success in the legal field:

1. Show Confidence

Men seem to have too much confidence. Women, on the other hand, exude too little. Talk to successful lawyers?or senior partners and they?ll tell you that the male confidence meter can be over the top while equally smart and accomplished women seem unsure, hesitant, or timid.

To get through law school, obtain a law degree, and pass the bar, you?ve obviously worked hard and accomplished much in a very short time. Recognize and own your gifts, talents and hard work; then confidently believe that those same skills will carry you on to continued excellence and achievement ? because it?s true.

2. Don?t Agonize Over Mistakes

The lawyer who tells you he?s never lost a case has never tried one, so the saying goes. The same holds true for mistakes. An attorney who hasn?t made a mistake has never worked in the legal profession.

If you make a mistake, own it, learn from it, and move forward. The way we handle setbacks opens up a window to character, perseverance, and problem-solving skills.

3. Seize Leadership Opportunities

Don?t just be a lawyer, be a leader. Starting out in your legal career, there are many opportunities to bury yourself in research and agonize over tiny details.

To set yourself apart and showcase your organizational, time-management, and people skills, seek out leadership positions in the firm and in the community. Volunteer to help organize a firm event or look for opportunities in the bar. The effort will not only get you noticed in your firm, it is also an investment in your professional brand that can pay dividends in unexpected ways in the future, such as by leading to new and better job opportunities and advancement.

4. Project a Professional Image

In the movie Bull Durham, Kevin Costner?s character, Crash Davis, gives career advice to the young, talented pitcher Ebby Calvin LaLoosh that goes like this:

?Your shower shoes have fungus on them. You?ll never make it to the bigs with fungus on your shower shoes. Think classy, you?ll be classy. If you win 20 in the show, you can let the fungus grow back and the press?ll think you?re colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob.?

The same applies to young lawyers. Once you?ve achieved legendary status, the legal profession may tolerate casual dress and flamboyant outfits. Until then, err on the side of projecting a professional image.

5. Enjoy Yourself

Lawyers spend a lot of time at work ? probably too much time. Make no mistake; if work is no fun, you will be miserable. While not every assignment is going to make you click your heels with delight, there are many that can impart joy and satisfaction.

Helping a client solve a problem, fighting to protect a person?s rights or simply knowing that you?ve done a job well can go a long way towards enjoying yourself and feeling as though you?ve spent your time in a worthwhile and meaningful endeavor.

Serbia to Probe Mystery Killings of Journalists :: Balkan Insight

Serbia's new goverment has decided to set up an "International Commission" to investigate the unsolved murders of journalists in the country.

The Commission will primarily investigate the killings of three prominent journalists, Dada Vujasinovic, Slavko Curuvija and Milan Pantic.

A publisher and journalist, Curuvija was shot in the head on April 11, 1999, while coming back home from an Easter walk.

The killers and those who directed them have never been identified, despite promises made by every government since Slobodan Milosevic was ejected from office in 2000.

Milosevic and his wife, Mirjana Markovic, were widely believed to have been involved in Curuvija's death.

During the March-June 1999 NATO bombing of Serbia, Curuvija blamed the Milosevic regime for the North Atlantic Alliance's military intervention.

Vujasinovic, a reporter for Duga Magazine, was killed 14 years ago. Her death was initially called a suicide, but earlier this week a new ruling said the case would be reopened as a suspected homicide.

Pantic, a local journalist from the central town of Jagodina, was shot on the doorstep of his home in 2001.

The task of the Commission will be analysing all former investigations, ascertaining the facts behind their failures, and creating grounds for future investigations.

Apart from representatives of the security services, the prosecution and the media, international investigators will take part in the Commission's work.

Dunja Mijatovic, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, welcomed the establishment of the new body and expressed the hope that it will yield results.

"Families and friends of killed journalists and society as whole need to see justice being served," she said.

"As long as journalists are afraid for their lives and the lives of their families while doing their job, we do not live in a free society," she added.

Turn on the tap and watch clean water flow. Observe as the waste water spirals down the plug hole. Enjoy the warmth of the central heating system on a cold winter day. These are things that we routinely take for granted. Plumbing is not a modern invention but is a development that has taken place over thousands of years. Plumbing has seen the coming and going of empires, the creation of religions, and can be regarded as one of the most important developments that humanity has ever achieved.

Ancient Times

When we talk about plumbing and sanitation many people regard the Romans as the founders of plumbing. This is not the case as civilisations further back have been shown to have used rudimentary plumbing systems. But, the word plumbing comes from the Latin for lead, plumbum. The Romans were the first civilization to bring systems together and construct buildings with plumbing in mind.

Archaeologists have uncovered ruins in the Indus Valley that date back to 2,700 BC. They discovered water courses for clean water systems running from high mounting streams into villages. Re-routing water supplies for irrigation systems is not something new. Mankind has been using irrigation systems for thousands of years. What makes the Indus special is that they employed handmade clay pipes with flanges that were sealed with asphalt. Other similar examples have been found in China, Greece, Persia and India.

The Roman Empire stretched across many of these regions and certainly the Romans traded widely with these regions, and this goes some of the way to explaining how the Romans came to adopt the water, waste, and heating systems now being uncovered. The Romans were the first civilization to build with plumbing systems incorporated into a building?s fabric at the construction stage. They designed and built under-floor heating systems by building the houses up on piles to enable warm air flow. They also built in water systems including hot water that was pumped through lead pipes into bathing pools. The Romans were also early pioneers of the waste recycle system and evidence has been found that the Romans used their grey water for agricultural purposes.

Medieval Times

The Medieval times were a dark time for human civilization and no more so than in respect of sanitation. Disease was rife and populations were exploding across Europe and the globe. Much of what had been learned by the ancient civilizations was now very much forgotten. Open cesspools and waste ditches ran through city streets. Water for consumption was being drawn directly from polluted sources. Stench and decay lay all around.

In 1596, Sir John Harrington invented the water closet. He wanted a system to remove the stench of human waste from his home. He devised a simple system of a header tank filled with water that was released once a crude valve had been opened. The waste was washed down into a cellar pit. The system was remarkable but failed to catch on because it was fundamentally flawed. The first problem was that the system required regular topping with buckets of water as there was no running water. The second was that the waste pit had to be emptied and this usually ended up back in the water system.

Industrial Revolution and Beyond

By the late 1700s, the Industrial Revolution was in full swing. The modern world was emerging as a new world of industry and manufacturing. Livelihoods were now being made in the towns and cities. Populations began to migrate from the countryside into the cities. With the growth in population came death and disease. Industrial centres such as London, Manchester, and Liverpool saw massive increases in rates of mortality. Outbreaks of cholera, typhoid and dysentery were commonplace. Something had to be done.

The growth of science had led to an increased awareness and understanding of disease. Early scientists became aware of the links between disease and polluted drinking water.

The Victorians made it their mission to improve sanitation and set about developing the underground sewer systems that are still in use today. They also started to develop ideas about handling waste and discovered ways to create pressured water systems to deliver water on tap.

One outstanding Victorian inventor was Thomas Crapper (1837 ? 1910) who is credited with inventing the world?s first clean water flush sanitation system. Crapper?s invention was to be the saving grace of many lives. His invention was quickly adopted and is now commonplace in all our homes.

Modern Times

The early thrust of the work carried out by the Victorians was disrupted by the outbreak of war in 1914. The subsequent depression of the 1920s and the outbreak of war in 1939 were to blame for the slow development of plumbing.

After the war had ended, the government began a programme of building development. Gone were the pre-war slums, and in their place were new buildings complete with copper pipes. Copper had replaced lead as the choice of material for pipe construction. Scientists had become acutely aware of the risk of lead poisoning that had heaped misery on many thousands in the pre-war period. As housing stock developed, so did understanding of sanitation systems.

Over the last 50 years, there have been huge developments in plumbing. Every week there is a patent registered for a new plumbing system or device. The plumbing industry and its manufacturing support industry are now worth billions of pounds per year. People earn their living from plumbing, but more importantly the industry safeguards all of our lives by ensuring that we never return to the disease-ridden past of our ancestors.

Canada?s Nexen oil company shareholders approve Chinese takeover for $15.1 billion

CALGARY, CANADA (BNO NEWS) ? Canadian oil and gas company, Nexen Inc., on Thursday announced that its shareholders have approved the proposed takeover by China National Offshore Oil Company (CNOOC).

The Plan of Arrangement, reportedly a $ 15.1 billion deal, was carried out through CNOOC Canada Holding Ltd. and was
approved by approximately 99 percent of the votes cast by Nexen common shareholders and around 87 percent of the votes cast by Nexen preferred shareholders at the special meeting held on Thursday.

According to the proposed agreement, CNOOC would be purchasing all of the outstanding common shares of Nexen for $ 27.50 per share in cash, including the company?s current debt of $ 4.3 billion which will remain outstanding.

However, the closing of the arrangement remains subject to the granting of the final order by the Court of Queen?s Bench of Alberta, the receipt of required regulatory approvals and the satisfaction or waiver of the other customary closing conditions.

Nexen operates oil sands and shale gas in Western Canada and conventional exploration and development primarily in the UK North Sea, offshore West Africa and Gulf of Mexico.

During the second quarter of this year, Nexen, which is based in Calgary, Alberta, produced an average of 207,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. As of December 2011, it also has about 5.6 billion barrels of oil equivalent when its Canadian oil sands are considered.

MINSK, Belarus (AP) ? Belarus is holding parliamentary elections Sunday without the main opposition parties, which boycotted the vote to protest the detention of political prisoners and opportunities for election fraud.

The election is to fill 110 seats in parliament, which long has been reduced to a rubber stamp by authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the former Soviet nation since 1994. Western observers have criticized all recent elections in Belarus as undemocratic.

Lukashenko's landslide win in a 2010 presidential election triggered a mass street protest that was brutally suppressed, and any rallies after the parliamentary vote would be certain to draw a similar harsh response.

The opposition had hoped to use this election to build support, but 33 out of 35 candidates from the United Civil Party were barred from television, while the state-owned press refused to publish their election programs.

"We are calling on voters to ... ignore and boycott this electoral farce," said party leader Anatoly Lebedko. The other party boycotting the vote is the Belarusian Popular Front.

About 40 candidates from communist and leftist groups critical of Lukashenko are still running, but they aren't expected to make it into the parliament, which has been fully occupied by government loyalists since the last three opposition members lost their seats in 2004.

"Lukashenko has made the situation totally absurd, not even bothering to put a democratic facade on it," said Vitaly Rymashevsky, who ran against Lukashenko in the 2010 presidential election. "He already knows the names of the new parliament members."

The president, who speaks about his critics with contempt, said the opposition parties' withdrawal from the vote reflected their weakness. "They have shown they are nobodies," he said Friday.

The United States and the European Union have imposed economic and travel sanctions on the Belarusian government over its crackdown on opposition groups and independent news media.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe has fielded 330 observers for Sunday's vote, but two monitors from the OSCE's Parliamentary Assembly were denied entry to Belarus without explanation.

About a quarter of eligible voters cast their ballots during the week, taking part in early voting that was strongly promoted by the authorities. Ballot boxes stood unguarded at polling stations for days, which observers described as a source of potential fraud.

"They compiled lists of those who took part in the early voting and may punish those who disobeyed," said student Roman Gubarevich, who cast his ballot on Wednesday.

Lukashenko has intensified repression of the opposition since the 2010 presidential election, which triggered a mass protest against election fraud that was dispersed by police, who arrested about 700 people. Some are still in jail, including presidential candidate Nikolai Stankevich.

On Tuesday, plainclothes security officers beat an Associated Press photographer and briefly detained him along with seven other journalists as they covered a protest by four opposition activists calling for a boycott of the vote. The opposition activists have remained in custody.

An Australian television journalist was detained at the Minsk airport on Friday by authorities, who confiscated his camera, computer and all the material he had gathered during a week of reporting before the vote. The journalist, Amos Roberts of Australian SBS TV, left Belarus on Saturday, but left behind his equipment and it was not known whether it would be returned.

Given the relentless crackdown on dissent, observers don't expect any significant post-election protests.

"The opposition was routed in the repressions that followed the presidential vote, and it has no energy for a useless struggle with a predictable outcome," said Alexander Klaskovsky, an independent political analyst.

"It's the most senseless campaign in a decade, which neither the people, the government nor the opposition want," said Yaroslav Romanchuk of the Mises Foundation.

Myanmar says not worried Suu Kyi upstaging president on U.S. visit

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Myanmar's government says it is not worried opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi will upstage the president during their overlapping U.S. visits because they work together for democracy, just as Nelson Mandela did with South Africa's last apartheid-era leader.

Aung Min, a minister in President Thein Sein's office, said on Friday that the government was "very proud" of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Suu Kyi, who this week in Washington was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for her fight for democracy.

Suu Kyi - who championed democracy in opposition to Myanmar's military junta during 17 years under house arrest - is on a coast-to-coast U.S. tour. Thein Sein will visit New York to speak at the U.N. General Assembly on Thursday.

"We don't worry about that," Aung Min told reporters at the United Nations in New York, when asked if Suu Kyi could outshine the president during their visits to the United States.

Suu Kyi struck a conciliatory note herself during a visit to the United Nations to meet Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday, saying she and Thein Sein had to "learn to work together."

The president has won international praise for driving reforms in the 18 months since the military ceded power. The former military heavyweight has freed more than 650 political prisoners, scrapped media censorship and introduced broad economic liberalization.

"The president alone cannot undertake all democratic reforms. I don't think Daw Aung San Suu Kyi alone can accomplish everything either. But the president and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will have to work together," Aung Min said.

"When you look at South Africa, Nelson Mandela alone could not have achieved what South Africa has managed to achieve. It was mainly because Mr. Mandela and Mr. de Klerk, they worked together," he said.

South Africa's last apartheid-era president, F.W. de Klerk, received the Nobel Peace Prize - jointly with Mandela - in 1993 for releasing Mandela from prison in 1990 and allowing multi-racial elections four years later. Mandela became South Africa's first black president in 1994.

"SYMBOL OF HUMAN RIGHTS"

Myanmar was ruled by army generals starting in 1962. Pro-democracy protests in 1988 led to elections in 1990 won by Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy, but the generals refused to step down. Suu Kyi was freed from house arrest in 2010 and elected to parliament in April this year.

Ban on Friday described Suu Kyi as a "symbol of human rights." Her last stay in the United States was in the 1970s as a U.N. employee.

"I pay my great tribute to President Thein Sein and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi," the secretary general said. "They have been walking together down the path of reconciliation and political stability and democracy and human rights, and I really count on her continuing support."

When asked if she was concerned about upstaging Thein Sein, Suu Kyi said the two were working toward a common goal.

"If we all want to achieve genuine democracy for Burma, we have to learn to work together and not think about our impact as personalities, either in our country or in the world at large," she said.

Suu Kyi and Aung Min welcomed an easing of sanctions on Myanmar. The United States on Wednesday removed sanctions that blocked any U.S. assets of Myanmar's president and the speaker of its lower house of parliament, and that generally barred American companies from dealing with them.

"I am happy that sanctions are now being lifted," Suu Kyi said. "It is time now that the Burmese people took responsibility for their democratization of the country."

Aung Min said the president would meet with members of the Myanmar community in the United States to encourage them to return home to help with the reconstruction of their country.
