Insight: Bomb blast brings Lebanon's party capital to juddering halt

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Luxury yachts line the glitzy seafront marina of Beirut's Zaytouneh Bay where owners would sip champagne at sunset before stepping out for dinner - spoilt for choice between going Italian at Signor Sassi or French at Cro Magnon.

Across the street, the Whisky Mist night club at the Intercontinental Phoenicia Hotel would normally be swinging with Beiruti night clubbers. Gulf Arabs would head for the oriental Awtar night club at the Monroe Hotel for a belly dancing show.

The real estate market, meanwhile, defies not just the laws of economics but geopolitical gravity. "How people can ask for $100,000 in rent when the country is on the edge of the abyss I find extraordinary," said Michael Karam, a wine writer.

Lebanon would seem to have it all: a cosmopolitan society, beach resorts, mountains, friendly weather, good food and wine, and buzzing bars.

The party capital of the Arab world, Beirut is a freewheeling city where Gulf Arabs, expatriates and Lebanese ?migr?s fly in to enjoy its luxury hotels. But under the veneer of modernity lie sectarian demons coiled to strike.

The car-bomb assassination last Friday of intelligence chief Wissam al-Hassan - an attack almost universally blamed on Syria and its local allies - brought the merry-go-round to a juddering halt.

Gunmen and protesters filled the streets, reflecting the antagonisms fuelling the conflict in next-door Syria and reviving memories of the sectarian hatreds that sunk Lebanon into its 1975-90 civil war, a conflict whose wounds have far from healed.

It is not just the sectarian poison - reflecting the regional struggle between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims and, in Lebanon, the Christians split into alliances with both sides - but the shocking social contrasts that lie beneath the surface.

'MANY LEBANONS'

Not far from the glamour of the Beirut seafront lie shanty towns where destitute people fight for daily survival.

Two apartments in the gleaming skyscrapers overlooking Zaytouneh Bay sold only a few months ago for $18 million and $14 million. Apartments for rent were non-negotiable a month ago at a price of $100,000. Real estate agents claimed demand was high from rich Syrians fleeing the conflict at home, but now they admit they may not see such fat deals for some time.

"There are many Lebanons. We live in a true disconnect. This place is on a respirator. We live in a bubble within the bubble," said Maria, 47, an interior designer who left Lebanon aged 9 and returned after 17 years abroad.

Even before last Friday's blast, the spillover from Syria had started to have a knock-on effect in Lebanon.

Security was deteriorating as the rule of law crumbled. Bank robberies and kidnappings for ransom picked up and sectarian rumblings between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims heightened as Lebanon's main Muslim factions lined up with the opposing sides of the Syrian conflict.

Tourists who come for the Roman ruins stayed away this year, leaving frightened Lebanese to contemplate another round of sectarian strife.

The Christian-Muslim bigotry that triggered Lebanon's own war is now buried within the overarching Sunni-Shi'ite struggle convulsing the region. The battle lines in Syria are drawn between the heterodox Shi'ite Alawite minority underpinning Bashar al-Assad and the rebellious Sunni majority, with minorities such as Christians and Druze caught in the crossfire.

Like other Lebanese, Karam has had enough. He will leave the country in which he married, had children and lived through three wars and a popular revolution.

"What prompted me to say this summer that it is time to go is the fact that Syria is in crisis. I am not for one second one of those people who say the Assad regime has to stay, No, but I think while Syria is in crisis Lebanon will be in a more dangerous situation," he said.

GREAT CITY

Karam moved to Lebanon from London in 1992, two years after the war ended and the rebuilding of Beirut by former premier Rafik al-Hariri, a billionaire construction tycoon, started.

The first tremor under this resurrected Beirut shook the city in 2005, when Hariri was killed by a massive bomb. The attack was blamed on Syria and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah.

"Now my kids are 15 and 14. They want to go out and I don't want them going out because I don't want to worry every time they go out," said Karam.

Maria, the interior designer, has already sent her two sons to school abroad. A Sunni Muslim with Shi'ite kids, she said sectarianism was embedded in Lebanese life and she did not want her children to subscribe to this culture.

"For me it is a personal choice but for them they have no place in this society. They don't subscribe to the grammar of this place," said Maria.

Beirutis are in a state of shock at the renewed violence, which is reviving memories of the civil war which claimed more than 150,000 lives.

RESILIENT CITY

Like many others Karam believes that unless the Lebanese rebuild a state not based on religion, tackle the security vacuum and revive the comatose economy, the country will lurch from periods of growth and prosperity to periods of instability.

Syria is the epicenter at the moment. Sectarian hostility is on the rise across the region. It began in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein, a Sunni Muslim, and the takeover of power by majority Shi'ites. This shift in the balance of power reinforced the influence of Shi'ite Iran and revived historic tensions in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Lebanon and Syria.

That ugly side was on display last week after the car bomb that killed Hassan, a Sunni Muslim opposed to the Syrian leadership.

In Sunni neighborhoods, gunmen set up roadblocks of burning tires, stopping passers-by and asking whether they were Sunni or Shi'ite - a chilling throwback to the civil war.

A Reuters cameraman was asked about his religion. Despite confirming he was Sunni he was prevented from filming because he was told he had a "Shi'ite beard".

Sectarian anger boiled over, with protesters chanting slogans insulting Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. "The blood of Sunnis is boiling," they said.

Yet despite all its troubles, there is a resilience to Beirutis, whose city could scarcely have survived without it.

"Beirut has tremendous energy, it is a city that picks itself up in few hours. It is like a very ugly woman with lots of charm and lots of character, extremely imperfect," said Maria.

"As imperfect as it is with all these people trying to live together, for better or for worse, they attempt to," she said.

Council has given the green light to creating a new not-for-profit corporation to handle sports and recreation facilities in the whole municipality.

It would be modeled after the Macdonald Island Park corporation, and Mayor Melissa Blake says it could mean the same kinds of successes in new places as new facilities are built.

?If you consider one sport and recreation board or commission that has the overarching view about how we create facilities, whether it?s something on the north side in the urban area, or if it?s places like Fort Chip or Anzac, if we can get a synergy, we simply transfer it from one place to another,? she explained.

Blake says having everything under the same umbrella could mean people buying one pass for everything.

?If you have an entity that?s working with all of the sport and recreation facilities, and they can come to an agreement about how they might be able to offer wider access, I think that?s a real benefit,? she said.

?So if I can get visitors from Fort Chipewyan that have a Fort Chip pass, come to McMurray and be able to participate at Macdonald Island or something new, that?s just a huge benefit for all of our residents.?

Blake says the new corporation could be what spearheads a new rec centre on the north side.

?Population is the dictator on everything,? she summarized. ?And if you contemplate the population on the other side of the river, you may find that the facility has to be as significant [as Macdonald Island], maybe different amenities that are part of it.?

?I don?t need two fifty-metre swimming pools that are really fast and fabulous, but I sure need some swimming pools up on the other side [of the river].?

The corporation is planned to eventually merge with the Macdonald Island Park corporation.

"I don't know the adrenaline starts pumping," Valley?said.? "It feels like you're actually going to win the match, that you got that set, so it's kind of exciting."

Kayleigh's also been exciting to watch on the basketball court, which is where she will continue her career at the next level.

"I've actually made a commitment to play basketball at the University of Montana," said Valley.

?"A kid that can go play division one in either sport, volleyball or basketball, it doesn't happen very often,?" said Titans head coach Mark Weis. "We've had a few of them come through University, but for me, this is my first one."

That wasn't the only tough decision Kayleigh had to make.? She was also responsible for selecting the team shoes, a choice that stood out in the GSL.

"At the beginning of the season I picked those out? and just thought it would be fun to go out as seniors having crazy shoes." Valley said.

"I'm telling you what, that was a great call, " Weis said.?"At first people were like coach are you really going to let them do that? I said 'hey it's their call, its their season. Its synonymous with us just being different and wanting to have fun."

Now, U-High's hoping those same qualities help them make a post-season push.

?"Our whole team goal is to make it to state and to do well there," said Valley.

"To get there we obviously have to get through districts and regionals and just keep playing the way we play."

Which is exciting, in crazy shoes.

12.8 million small business have a free-to-use Facebook Page, and 8 million use it monthly. By making advertising easier, Facebook got 300,000 of them to buy its new Promoted Posts ads, Sheryl Sandberg explained on today?s earnings call. 25%, or 75,000 of them had never bought Facebook ads before. The news shows that by designing ad products for mom & pop, Facebook can turn the long tail of businesses into spenders.

Sandberg explained that ?it?s really hard to get local businesses online.? Still, of the 12.8 million local business Pages, 3.5 million post to their fans weekly. But getting these businesses that rarely have designated online marketing budgets to spend money has been a bigger challenge.

For years, Facebook has been trying to teach small and medium-sized local businesses how to use its relatively complicated advertising system. Then in Q2 it had a eureka moment. Rather than smartening them up, it dumbed its product down.

It created an easy new ad format called Promoted Posts where once a Page has shared something to the news feeds of its fans, it can pay to show that post to a bigger percentage of their fans with just two clicks. There?s no complex, separate ad targeting interface, and they can even be bought from mobile.

Mobile is also where users are consuming branded content on mobile. Sandberg noted that 100,000 SMBs have tried out the Facebook Offers online coupon product. This is free but incentivizes businesses to buy ads to bring in fans they can share the offers with.

Expect Facebook to explore more ways to make its other traditional sidebar and Sponsored Story ads easier to use so it can get more SMBs on board. Even if it takes 1000 of them to equal the spend of a big brand, Facebook needs to monetize in every direction.

The past three seasons of Kentucky Basketball have certainly been a whirlwind of just about everything a college program can experience. ?From the lowest of lows that the Billy Gillispie era brought about to the enormous?heights that current coach John Calipari has restored the program to, it?s safe to say that we?ve been through quite a bit in recent years. ?One of the many things that the enormous heights have brought about are countless stars that have been making their way through Lexington to play college ball. ?So far in Coach Cal?s tenure he has sent 15 players to the Association with many more certain to follow. ?Since those individuals were only here for a?brief?period of time and given the sheer volume of players being produced it?s difficult for any one fan to keep up with them at all times. ?So in order to give an update on how some of Calipari?s and previous administrations??Wildcats?are doing, I researched just how they were performing on their various teams throughout the NBA preseason.

Keep in mind that it is the preseason so numbers really aren?t reflective of what they?ll be in the regular season, but some players are still producing just about what is expected of them, in particular Anthony Davis and DeMarcus?Cousins. ?Both players are currently showing why they were deserving of the high draft selections they earned in their?respective years. ?Other players like Enes Kanter and Eric Bledsoe are looking to show why they are poised for breakout seasons, as they?re averaging 12 and 11.7?points?per game respectively. ?Some?like Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Marquis Teague are discovering right out of the gate that the league is a bit more difficult than college, but it?s clear they have the potential to be standouts at the next level in due time.

The NBA Preseason, like all other professional preseasons, is a time for young players to grow and for veterans to get back in the swing of things so it?s not surprising to see established players like Keith Bogans and Tayshaun Prince to put up low numbers early (age aside). ?Likewise it?s not shocking to see Michael Kidd-Gilchrist?struggle early given the vast amounts of?incompetency?he will be forced to play with early on in his career. ?But, the most staggering thing about compiling this list was it?s sheer size. ?It?s still difficult to believe, even now, the tremendous number of players that Kentucky currently has playing ball in the NBA. ?Given the way Calipari has things rolling right now, is it out of the realm of possibility that perhaps 40 players from Kentucky could populate the league at one time? ?The past says that?s an absurd argument to make, but the present and future may eventually say otherwise.

Link found between Alzheimer's disease and protein regulation in the brain - hope for new treatments

A link has been discovered between Alzheimer's disease and the activity level of a protein called eIF2alpha. This has been reported in a new study conducted at the University of Haifa's Sagol Department of Neurobiology, recently published in the journal Neurobiology of Aging. According to Prof. Kobi Rosenblum, head of the Department, altering the performance of this protein via drug therapy could constitute a treatment for Alzheimer's, which is incurable.

Alzheimer's research in recent years has primarily focused on battling the disease once symptoms have appeared, even though it's known that the disease nests in the brain many years before any symptoms are revealed. In advanced stages of the disease, Prof. Rosenblum explains, small lumps (called plaques) are identified forming in the brain from a protein called amyloid. These plaques, he says, are typical of Alzheimer's sufferers and undermine brain functioning. Much research has been directed at understanding these plaques and trying to eliminate them or restrict their formation and growth.

The new study, conducted by research student Yifat Segev in the Laboratory for Research of Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms Underlying Learning and Memory, which is headed by Prof. Rosenblum, in cooperation with Prof. Danny Michaelson of Tel Aviv University, sought to identify factors that could be linked to Alzheimer's even before the irreversible amyloid plaques are formed, and that are connected to the disease's primary risk factor ? age.

A previous study co-authored by Canadian researchers and Prof. Rosenblum's lab at the University of Haifa, revealed that cognitive abilities could be improved by altering the activity of the eIF2alpha protein, which regulates the creation of proteins in all cells, including nerve cells. That research gave Alzheimer's researchers a glimmer of hope: Perhaps it would be possible to improve cognitive abilities or even prevent cognitive damage in Alzheimer's patients at an early stage of the disease by intervening in the mechanisms that regulate protein generation in nerve cells.

The current study compared mice that expressed the human Apoe4 gene - a gene known as a central risk factor for Alzheimer's - with a group of mice with the parallel Apoe3 gene, which does not constitute a risk factor for the disease. Mice in the former group showed a change in the regulating mechanism for protein generation involving the eIF2alpha protein that damaged the cognitive abilities of those mice at a young age. This sort of mechanism change is characteristic of aging, and so also hinted at the tendency of these mice toward premature aging.

According to Segev, this is the first time that a link has been found between the activity of eIF2alpha and the Apoe4 gene in relation to Alzheimer's disease. She noted that modification treatments for the eIF2alpha mechanism are being widely researched and are developing quickly, and so the more we can understand about the connection between this mechanism and Alzheimer's, the more we can find ways to identify and slow the progress of the disease.

The Windows?8 launch is finally upon us, and I guarantee you there are a lot of nervous people in Redmond right now. How could they not be?

You?re about to launch a new version of your operating system that is such a radical departure from what PC users have come to expect that it should be called "Windows We Hope You?re Ready for Something Really Different." Sheer inertia is certainly a concern. After all, the Live Tiles, panoramic Modern-style interface and new tools like the Charms menu all require a learning curve. But that?s not the biggest challenge Microsoft?faces. These are.

1. Hardware is too pricey
One of the biggest reasons ultrabooks haven?t sold as well as Intel and its partners expected is that prices haven?t come down fast enough. You can finally find some in the $699 range, but that?s still about $200 more than the typical budget laptop.

Now, shoppers will be asked to pony up $1,100 to $1,200 to enjoy touch-based convertibles like the Lenovo IdeaPad Yoga, Sony VAIO Duo 11 and Dell XPS 12. Intel shared with us recently that its own studies show that consumers are willing to pay $150 to $200 more for touch, but I?m not sure that will fly in a down economy and a holiday season dominated by the cheap iPad mini, Kindle Fire and Nexus 7.

Windows RT devices like Microsoft?s Surface are more affordable at $499, the same as the iPad. But opting for the Touch Cover keyboard (the accessory being touted in Microsoft?s ads) brings the price to $599.

Windows 8-powered hybrids like the $749 Acer Iconia W510 (with keyboard) and Samsung Ativ Smart PC 500T (I swear I?m not making that name up) don?t have the same sexy industrial design as the Surface, but their Atom processors make these devices more versatile because users can run traditional desktop apps. You can get the W510 without a keyboard for a reasonable $499.

2. Windows 8 vs. Windows RT confusion
Shoppers will have a tough time telling the difference between the two flavors of new Windows devices on shelves this holiday season, because they both feature the same slick Live Tile interface. But there is a huge difference between the two platforms.

In a nutshell, Windows 8 PCs can run any app downloaded from the Windows Store as well as all desktop applications. Windows RT tablets and hybrids (powered by ARM processors) will be limited to Windows Store apps and Microsoft?s Office 2013, even though you?ll still be able to access the desktop for things like transferring files?off a USB drive.

Sounds like a pretty simple delineation, but as The Verge proved with some undercover testing, Microsoft?s own store employees don?t know the difference between the two operating systems. Microsoft responded to this eye-opening report by saying that all of its sales reps will receive 15 hours of training before launch. The clock is ticking.

3. Not enough apps
At last count there were nearly 3,500 apps in the Windows Store. And while there are a handful of compelling options so far, there are a lot more holes in Microsoft?s lineup than I would expect at this late stage. Where is Facebook? Twitter? YouTube? Dropbox? Angry Birds??

The good news: Microsoft will unveil plenty of high-profile apps either at the launch of its OS or shortly thereafter, hopefully filling in a fair number of these holes. But I still have serious concerns about the breadth of options that will be available. After all, Apple has 250,000 apps just for the iPad, thanks to its huge head start.

Microsoft also needs to prove that Windows 8 is a viable gaming platform and not just rest on the Xbox name, as it has done with Windows Phone. Shoppers need to see console-quality eye candy along with casual fare. I?m encouraged by the fact that the Unreal Engine III has been ported to Windows 8, however, which should help lead to Infinity Blade-style titles in the Windows Store. Titles based on the Unity engine will come after launch.

4. Crappy touchpads
Sure, Windows 8 works best with touch, but the sweet spot for most shoppers right now is $500 clamshell designs that rely on touchpads. Based on previous experience, I?m very worried that these pointing devices won?t deliver the smooth gesture support that will add up to a good user experience. On a lot of pre-production samples I?ve tried the touchpad didn?t always respond when I swiped in from the left to switch apps. And most of them didn?t support the gesture to move in from the left and quickly back to the right to see all of your open apps.

If notebook vendors can?t make pinch-to- zoom work well or two-finger scrolling, they?ll have an even harder time getting Windows 8 gestures to work reliably. I?m really hoping Synaptics, Microsoft and OEMs get it right, but it will probably take a while.

5. Macs on the rise
Microsoft shouldn?t just be concerned about the iPad and the rumored "iPad Mini." It should take note that Apple is now No. 1 in notebook sales in the U.S. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is consistently the top seller at retail, and all you need to do is peek inside any coffee shop to see a sea of MacBook Airs. I?ve said this before, but the Mac's?OS X?Mountain Lion could prove more attractive than Windows 8?to those looking for a more traditional operating system this holiday, especially for those who own other Apple devices and like the idea of having iCloud keeping everything in sync.

Bottom line
Microsoft is reportedly spending $1.5 billion to launch and promote Windows 8, and the company has never been under more pressure to make sure that shoppers get the message. But what is that message? Is it that you can have your cake and eat it too with a Windows 8 PC that runs mobile and ?legacy? apps? That you can get all-day battery life, iPad-like portability and Office productivity with a Windows RT device? It?s actually all of the above, which is a big part of the challenge.

Although Microsoft?having a hero device like the Surface tablet?helps, Windows 8 will succeed or fail not based on how well the Surface fares. Just as with every other Windows launch, Microsoft will once again rely on an ecosystem of app developers and hardware?makers to make its software sing. All of the above five obstacles are not insurmountable, but they?re very real.
